Job Description for Ushers
(Updated 9/1/10)
Greeting and Seating
1. Arrive at church at least 20 minutes before the service at which you will usher.
2. Smile, greet people, and hand them orders of service as they enter the sanctuary. Also pass out large print hymnals to any individuals who need them.
3. Point out empty seats to people as the sanctuary becomes full. Encourage people to sit near the front and on the far side so latecomers can sit near the door.
4. Close the doors to the sanctuary after the prelude finishes and before the special music or opening words. Sit in a chair in the back row closest to the door.
5. When latecomers enter the sanctuary, help them find an empty seat. However, do not seat latecomers during the opening words, chalice lighting, meditation, shared silence, or special music. Ask them to wait until to be seated.
Collecting the Offering
1. Take down the collection baskets from on top of the hymnal rack.
2. Walk to the front of the sanctuary in front of the chalice table. Starting with the front row, one usher should pass a basket down the left aisle. The other usher should pass a basket down the right aisle. Keep the baskets circulating.
3. After the service, take the offering to the church office. Fill out an offering form. (Check Mailbox #37 for an offering form.) Put the cash in an envelope. Clip together the offering form, the envelope, and any checks and put them in the safe in the storage closet.
4. Return the baskets to on top of the hymnal rack.
Counting Attendance
1. Count the number of people attending the worship service. Include people who are in the kitchen or sitting in the Welcoming Room. Fill in the chart in the church office.
Emergency Situations

2. In case of a medical emergency, use the phone in the church office to dial 911.
