Live multi-platform worship in the sanctuary and online through zoom!

June 25: “Ever Willing: Becoming the People Our World Needs,” Rev. Manish Mishra-Marzetti

This Sunday we will view a livestream of the UUA General Assembly Sunday morning worship service. This will be a longer service, approximately 1 ½ hours. You can join us for a watch party in the sanctuary or in the Church Zoom Room. A description of the service is below:

The pandemic has wrought change and created uncertainty for institutions, like our Unitarian Universalist congregations, and our wider world. Who and what are we becoming, individually and collectively? Our GA Sunday service explores these themes as we gather in community to celebrate the best of who we UUs are.

Worship In July at Saltwater Church

In July our theme is Embracing Possibilities and the Worship Team is arranging for meaningful and fun opportunities in lieu of our regular services. For our in-person folks there will be Worshipful Workshops – informal, lay-led, participatory workshops centered on different spiritual practices. For our folks on-line, there will be facilitated Chalice Circles over zoom each week with discussion questions related to the theme of Embracing Possibilities.

Some things to note about these events:

  1. These workshops and chalice circles are replacing the regular worship services in July and will be at the regular time of 10:30 am on Sundays.
  2. This is not a permanent change in how we do worship – this is something we are trying out for the month of July.
  3. These will not be multi-platform services; the in-person and online events will be separate. This will allow staff and volunteers who have been working diligently to create the multiplatform experience an opportunity to rest, renew, and be ready to start up again in August!

We hope you will take this opportunity to embrace a new possibility by attending one or more of these different ways to worship. If you have any questions, reach out to one of the Worship Team members: Janeane Weprin, Meri Murphy, Joanne Stonebraker, and Janeira St. Clare.

Worshipful Workshop: 10:30 am, In-person

July 2: Collage as a Spiritual Practice led by Mayda Taney

Collaging is a process-oriented, creative, and often meditative experience.  The practice is to be in the moment and trust your attraction to imagery without worry about the end product. It is about allowing yourself to open to beauty, be playful, and just let the collage happen. Please bring scissors.

Chalice Circle: 10:30 am Online in the Church Zoom Room

July 2: Facilitated by Rosalie Olds

The format for our summer chalice circles is simple: a chalice lighting, check-in, and a reflection question on an aspect of the theme for July, embracing possibilities. In chalice circles we come to be nourished by authentic relationships, to listen and be listened to, to mutually support one another, and to create space for spiritual insight.

From Our Leadership

Transitional Ministry Update

The Congregational Meeting on June 11 included an update on where we are in our transition. In every newsletter, we’ll give a weekly update on our progress.

Our goal is to contract with a minister who will lead services, provide pastoral care and manage administration. We’re listing the start date as August 1, 2023. Ministers usually have an August 1 start date, to give them adequate time to learn about the congregation, make connections and establish their systems and processes for the busy church year.

This week, we completed and posted the “Congregational Record”. It was a big accomplishment, describing what we’re looking for and who we are. It’s kind of like posting a position on a job search website specifically for UU ministers.

Good progress! Now, we wait for ministers to indicate an interest.

Ways To Live Our Values

Share the Plate for June
Project Feast

Half of all undesignated donations received in the month of June will be shared with Project Feast. Project Feast empowers refugee and immigrant cooks by preparing them for culinary careers and becoming food
entrepreneurs. Participants reside in South King County and many are low income women.

Of note are three programs:

  • The Culinary Skills Apprentice program combines classroom, kitchen, and ESL lessons to prepare English Language learners for a good job in a food business or to start their own food business.
  • Family Meals to Go is a weekly meal which can be ordered on Tuesday for pickup on Thursdays between 12-2p at the Café in Kent. Each week’s meal is inspired by one of the apprentices. Ordering is open to anyone and vegan options are available. Catering is also available which Saltwater enjoyed at our recent Pledge Drive celebration dinner.
  • The Community Meals program provides culturally appropriate emergency meals for immigrant and refugee families as well as seniors. The Kent School District participates in this supplemental food program.

You can make a donation to share the plate through the donate button on our website  or mail a check to the church office with “basket” in the memo line: Saltwater UU Church, 25701 14 Pl S., Des Moines, WA 98198.

Climate Message of the Week

No one knows for sure what the climate crisis will bring but everyone agrees—the climate is already changing and will continue to change.

Some of the coming changes will probably be hard. But as we were reminded by the book for our Story for All Ages in the service last Sunday, “The End is Just the Beginning.” Tackling the climate crisis isn’t just about loss—it’s also about your opportunity to shape the future. So do whatever you do best—write, speak, advocate, plant, cook, repair—to make it a future with clean water and air, healthy people, and vibrant ecosystems. ***image credit: Yelena Odintsova
