Act For Justice with your Saltwater friends and family
As Unitarian Universalists, we believe that working toward a more compassionate and just world is an important part of growing our own souls. We also hold that faith-based justice work is more than obtaining and sharing information. It is about transformation. To transform the world, we ourselves need to be transformed — and that is an ongoing process we do together at Saltwater Unitarian Universalist Church. The ways we Act For Justice and our continuing efforts to increase education and community involvement are part of how we transform the world.
Our community gathers together for various activities that serve our justice work. We host regularly reoccurring activities in addition to showing up for our greater community with mutual aid and by providing representation at local events. For the most accurate information about meetings and justice events, read our newsletter or look at our event calendar. Some of our opportunities to get involved include:
Racial Justice Organizing Team (RJOT) – meets monthly
Our Racial Justice Organizing Team is a a small group of organizers that work together to identify ways our community can actively engage in racial justice. They help our community by providing a resource for local events, hosting educational opportunities such as Community Book Reads, and staying aware and engaged with current local and national issues. They organize workshops like our Whistle Kit event and mailing campaigns, one of the most popular being our participation in the UU the Vote efforts.
At their meetings, RJOT members share ideas, provide support, learn about opportunities, plan events for our members, and work together to advance our commitment to Act for Racial Justice. Meetings are typically over Zoom and on a weekday evening.
Sound Alliance Team – meets monthly
The members of this team actively work with the local non-profit organization titled Sound Alliance. Their focus is on Social Justice in our local communities. Our team meets monthly to identify action items for the Saltwater Community that aligns with Sound Alliance. They work to keep us aware of opportunities, calls for action, and legislation initiatives. We encourage all members and friends of Saltwater to participate and support our Sound Alliance Team.
Team meetings are typically over Zoom and on a weekday evening.
Stance for Racial Justice – meets monthly
Community members gather in person to hold signs and stand in solidarity at the intersection of 272nd Street and Pacific Highway S (near Jack in the Box and Arco gas). We increase visibility and awareness while fostering connections with one another and engaging with local community members. Join us once, or join us every month, the more the merrier. Prepare for all types of weather and don’t forget to stay hydrated.
We meet monthly, typically on Sundays following service around 12:30pm.
Saltwater Climate Action Now! (SCAN!) – meets monthly
Saltwater Climate Action NOW is a committee dedicated to advocacy around climate issues and education for Saltwater Unitarian Universalist, as well as Bet Chaverim. We have members from both congregations and we welcome those who wish to educate, seek solutions and advocate for local, state and Federal actions to prevent the further warming of our Earth and addressing the associated justice issues. SCAN! leads our Ivy Pull Work Parties and coordinates other activities that directly impact our community as well as the state of Washington.
Our team meets monthly, typically over Zoom on a weekday evening. We also host events and provide educational presentations to the community whenever possible.
