Theme for February: Justice & Equity

Like love, justice is part of our mission here at Saltwater UU Church. Many of us have come to this faith in part because we want to create a more just word. Together in community, with the benefit of multiple perspectives, we hope to gain a wider vision of justice and equity than any one of us could hold alone, along with more power to make the vision real. For more on this topic, view Rev. Alison’s post here.

Worship In February at Saltwater Church

February 18 My Grandmother’s Hands – Kokayi Nosakhere and Rev. Alison Duren-Sutherland (in-person)

Join Rev. Alison and author and activist Kokayi Nosakhere as they share lessons and practices from Resmaa Menakem’s book My Grandmother’s Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending Our Hearts and Bodies. This service offers an understanding of the way racialized trauma is passed down through generations — and practical tools we can use to heal that trauma in our own bodies and lives.

After the service and potluck, join Kokayi in embodiment practices from My Grandmother’s Hands as part of our Faith Formation Sunday.

February 25 Celebrating Community – Rev. Alison Duren-Sutherland (in-person) (multigenerational service)

We are Saltwater UU Church! Come join us as we welcome new members, acknowledge our dedicated volunteers, and celebrate that all of us have freely chosen to be part of this beloved community.

February Faith Formation Sunday – Multiplatform – Potluck
Sunday February 18, 10:30am – 2:00pm
In Person – Saltwater Church AND Church Zoom Room

Join us the third Sunday of the month for Faith Formation Sunday, where we will explore our February theme of Justice & Equity! Those who are attending in-person may stay after the worship service for a potluck lunch followed by a short ritual and all-ages programming.

Potluck guidelines: Please bring a generously sized dish to share, and mark ingredients if they are not easily visible. If you can, please plan to arrive before service and stay a bit afterwards to assist with set up and clean up. Questions? Contact any member of the Social Task Force (Pat Montgomery, Judy Featherstone, Carol Mitchell, Nancy Corr or Debra Valpey.

For our all-ages programming after the potluck, we’re excited for our adults, youth, and children to get to know three Saltwater teams that help us practice justice: Saltwater Climate Action Now!, the Racial Justice Organizing Team, and Sound Alliance will all have tables where you can learn more, ask questions, and get involved. Additionally, our guest speaker will have a station where she will lead us through embodied practices from My Grandmother’s Hands. Director of Faith Formation, Jessica Nash, will be leading our children and youth from station to station, sparking their budding social activism.

Remote guidelines: Those who are attending Faith Formation Sunday remotely are invited to return to the Church Zoom Room at 12:45pm for our multiplatform programming. Speculative Fiction Book Group
Saturday February 24, 3:30pm – 5:00pm
Saltwater Conference Room and Speculative Fiction Book Group Zoom Room

Join fellow Saltys in reading science fiction (and maybe a little bit of fantasy) in UU community! This group is the brain-child of Rev. Alison and Lynette Pierce, who has agreed to facilitate our first meeting, where we’d like to choose some books to read together in the future. For that first group, Lynette suggested we read a novella available from many local libraries and as an audiobook: The Past Is Red by Catherynne M. Valente. We hope it will be a quick read, but please always feel free to come to the group even if you haven’t had a chance to read the book (as long as you don’t mind spoilers!).

For our first meeting, we’re going to try out a hybrid model, with some folks participating in-person and others joining in at this unique Zoom link:  https://uuma.zoom.us/j/98693571917. The Office Conference Room has a special set up that should allow online and in-person participants to interact smoothly. However, there will only be snacks provided if you come in person. Please feel free to bring some snacks to share.

Transgender Relocation Fundraiser – Drag Queen Storytime
Saturday February 24, 10:00am
Off-Site – Pierce College

Tahoma UU is doing a fundraiser for the trans relocation work the UUSC is helping to coordinate. They are trying to raise enough for an Airbnb for a family with trans member(s) who need to relocate. Folks can buy tickets or donate to the cause using the link on the flier: https://bit.ly/bannedpicturebooks. If you aren’t aware of the status of trans rights in the USA, I recommend checking out Erin in the Morning’s site: Erin In The Morning | Erin Reed | Substack. It is dire in many states, and it may be worse after this legislative session.

Want to drive down as a group? Contact Lisa Key for carpooling options.

Our goal is to have all members participate in this training (many already have) that lovingly but unabashedly helps us confront the historical and lingering effects of discrimination, governmental policies, and prejudice that mark our nation’s history with First Peoples of our area. Contact Diane Dobrowolski (ddobrowolski@earthlink.net) or Lucia Faithfull (lfaithfull@comcast.net) to sign up. Space is limited.

The Unitarian Universalist Association and the Events in Israel and Palestine

Saltwater’s Racial Justice Organizing Team feels deep pain as we watch the news from the Middle East. We decided to make the congregation aware of what our Unitarian Universalist Association has to say about the events unfolding in Palestine and Israel. These links include a depth of resources, including other actions concerning Palestine taken or proposed by the UUA and its member congregations over the years.

Alison’s message via the home page of the church website or here: Minister’s Messages

Climate Message of the Week

Storytelling is one of the most powerful tools we can use to take action to slow down climate change. Study after study has shown that facts alone don’t motivate or inspire people to be part of the climate solution, but stories do. The best way to be a climate storyteller is to talk to people around you about how something you care about is being affected by the changing climate– things like how you see fewer butterflies, how polluted air has made it harder for you to breathe, how salmon runs have changed over the years. And then connect that to climate change. Bill Nye, the Science Guy, says that that talking to others about climate change and voting are the two most important things you can do. ****Image Credit: Jopwell

Are there topics or questions you’d like to see covered in future Climate Messages? Email suggestions to Sheri Jacobson at sheridjacobson@yahoo.com.
