“Can We Be More Like Nurse Logs?,” Elisabeth Maaike Geschiere, Guest Speaker

Change is haaaard for most of us, including me. Leadership theorist Ronald Heifetz teaches that this is because all change begins with loss. And loss can feel like a death, however big or small. So, what might these “dead” trees of the forest that nurture so much new life have to teach us about change?

Bio:

Elisabeth Maaike Geschiere, is a descendant of Dutch, Protestant Christian, working class immigrants who were mostly farmers. She is an Aspirant UU Minister and Chaplain whose sponsoring congregation is the First UU Church of Nashville. She graduated with her Master of Divinity from Vanderbilt Divinity School in 2021 and completed her Chaplain Residency in Olympia, WA this past August. She hopes to be a full time healthcare chaplain in the Puget Sound region soon.

Theme for November : Change

In the month of November we are exploring the theme of change. Octavia Butler wrote in Parable of the Sower: “All that you touch, you Change. All that you Change, Changes you. The only lasting truth is Change. God is Change.” What is your relationship to change? How do you believe change happens? Is it personal or collective? Is it something that happens to us or something we create? Does the process matter? Join us for a month of exploration of inner and outer transformation.

The COVID-19 Diaries

It was one year ago when the Saltwater Scribes published The COVID-19 Diaries.

At this One Year Anniversary, it’s interesting to dip into how we were feeling at that time. The essays and poems are not about hardship but about fellowship. Our church community pulled together as we walked through the darkest days of the pandemic.

If you haven’t yet seen this book, we hope you’ll order it. And it makes a nice holiday gift — celebrating kindness during adversity. All profits go to the church. https://www.amazon.com/COVID-19-Diaries-Saltwater-Writers/dp/B09KN4H149/ref=sr_1_1?

Staff Update – Office Administrator

Katherine “Bubba” Miller continues to be out of the office. They are recovering from Covid and also caring for their father who is in the hospital. Please send care and healing to Bubba and their family. We are unsure when Bubba will be able to return to the office. For immediate and urgent needs, please contact Rev. Updates to the COVID-19 Safety Guidelines

On September 28, the Board met and reviewed our Covid Safety guidelines and approved changes. Below are highlights. You can access the full revised guidelines here:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1AMu7VA0BGb5Ssk-SvVFPIvRq6x4iX0rd/view?usp=sharing

— For events in which the purpose is food related, such as coffee hour and potlucks, unmasking indoors is permitted. At all other times, masking is required indoors.

— Small groups of adults, twelve people or less, can remove their masks during an indoor program if all members of the group consent. Food and drinks are allowed as long as there is group consent.

If you have any questions about the COVID-19 Guidelines, feel free to reach out to members of the Board or a staff member. Thank you for continuing to care for our community.

UUA Article II Study Commission Draft & November Sessions

The Article II Study Commission of the Unitarian Universalist Association has released a full draft of proposed changes. You can read the draft and sign up for feedback sessions in November here: https://www.uua.org/uuagovernance/committees/article-ii-study-commission/blog/draft-feedback. Below is also information about how you can engage with this important moment in our faith tradition to articulate who we are as Unitarian Universalists, what we most deeply value, and what commitments those values ask of us.

The Article II Study Commission is excited to share a full draft of Article II (PDF, 3 Pages) for feedback. The Study Commission’s outreach team will be hosting Zoom feedback sessions in the first half of November, along with gathering feedback through a forthcoming online form for individual comments.

The Study Commission will present its final draft to the Board in January for inclusion on the agenda for General Assembly 2023. It will then be the subject of mini-Assemblies before the initial vote at GA 2023. If it passes that delegate vote by a majority, it will require a 2/3 majority vote at GA 2024 to become the new Article II of the Bylaws.

This draft makes significant changes to Article II. We invite you to read it using one of the
practices we have started following in our work:

  1. Read it the first time to observe how it makes you feel.
  2. Read a second time, observe what it makes you think.
  3. Finally read it a third time before thinking about any suggestions.

Ways To Live Our Values

Share the Plate for November
Duwamish Tribal Services

Half of all undesignated donations received in the month of November will be shared (and matched) with the Duwamish Tribe. https://www.duwamishtribe.org/

Each Sunday we acknowledge the land of the indigenous peoples of the Duwamish Tribe. In 1983, after more than 100 years of broken United States treaty promises, the Duwamish Tribal Services established a non-profit 501[C]3 organization to provide social and cultural services to the Duwamish Tribal community. The Duwamish Tribe currently has around 600 enrolled members. Many more people have dxʷdəwʔabš ancestry but have chosen to enroll with federally recognized tribes, in order to obtain health and other human services.

In the absence of federal recognition, funding, and human services, Duwamish Tribal Services has struggled to provide numerous social, educational, health, and cultural programs during the past 35 years.

We are pleased to support their efforts.

You can make a donation to share the plate through the donate button on our website
https://saltwaterchurch.org/stewardship/donate/  or mail a check to the church office with “basket” in the memo line: Saltwater UU Church, 25701 14 Pl S., Des Moines, WA 98198.

Share the Plate: New Opportunities for 2023!

Share the Plate, our justice ministry of sharing half of our undesignated donations on Sunday morning with a local non-profit that reflects our Unitarian Universalist values, is approaching a new year ahead. Since May of 2022, those donations have been matched, and this match will continue until May 2023. We would love to receive your nominations!

In the past year we have supported: International Rescue Committee (Ukrainian refugees), Federal Way Day Center, Duwamish Tribal Services, Hospitality House, Federal Way Community Caregiving Network, Sound Generations, New Horizon School, Food Innovation Network, Puget Sound Keeper, Blue Legacy and the UU Service Committee. The share the plate criteria is simple:

  • Organization must be a 501 (c) 3 non-profit
  • The organization’s mission must align with UU values and principles
  • Organizations that serve South King County will receive priority

What organization do you feel we should be supporting?

We are asking that all past recipients resubmit a request for funding if you want your group considered for 2023. A few organizations will receive a share the plate each year as a reflection of our ongoing relationship and commitment to these organizations: Hospitality House, Federal Way Day Center, and Duwamish Tribal Services.

Please complete the form https://saltwaterchurch.org/share-the-plate/ or submit it to Kathy Linnell, kelizlinnell@comcast.net with your recommendations or phone her at (206) 651-7787. The deadline is December 6, 2022. Let’s make 2023 another stellar year of our giving. You can make it happen!

If you are planning to host an event in the Church Zoom Room please contact our Office Administrator (administrator@saltwaterchurch.org) the day before your scheduled event. They will need to verify your device has been registered to use the Church Zoom Room.
