Live multi-platform worship in the sanctuary and online through Zoom!

Theme for November: Generosity

In the month of November, we are engaging with the theme of generosity. What does it mean to give generously of ourselves? In what ways does life give generously to us, and how can we share that generosity with others and the world? Join us as we contemplate generosity from different perspectives.

Worship In November at Saltwater Church

November 26 Thanxgrieving – Rev. Alison Duren-Sutherland (online)

In late November of 1991, HIV/AIDS activists Ibrahim Farajaje and John Paul Hammond lost a dear friend to AIDS and struggled to imagine facing Thanksgiving without him. Out of their pain and love, Thanxgrieving was born. Rev. Alison will share the history of the Thanxgrieving observance and explore its continued relevance in the 21st century.

Worship In December at Saltwater Church

December 3 Holidays of Light – Lay-led Multigenerational Service

Let us celebrate together. At this time when folks around the world from many traditions are lighting candles in the darkness, we wanted to lift up a few of these traditions: Advent in the Christian tradition, Bodhi Day in the Buddhist tradition, and the weekly lighting of the Shabbat candles in the Jewish tradition. If you can, please bring a small unscented candle or LED light for our alter.

A Fond Farewell to Cami

With full hearts we share that our beloved Cami Celestia is no longer able to serve as Saltwater Church’s pianist. Though she had hoped to continue through the end of the year, circumstances necessitated that last Sunday, November 12th, be her last day with us. Sadly, this means that we were unable to give her the send-off that we would have hoped to provide, publicly acknowledging her good work and offering us all a chance to say goodbye. Cami’s artistry has enriched our Sunday mornings for the past year, and it is with both grief and gratitude that we bid her a fond farewell, wishing her all the best in future endeavors.

Final Proposed Article II Revision Text Released

The Article II Study Commission has released a revised draft of the proposed changes to Article II of the Unitarian Universalist Association bylaws, incorporating the amendments passed at this year’s General Assembly. Find their final proposal here: Article II Revision

As UUs, we actively participate in the decision making of our denomination by informing ourselves on key issues, engaging with opportunities to provide feedback to the denomination (surveys, listening sessions, etc), and voting at General Assembly. As part of this active participation, Saltwater Church will focus our December Faith Formation Sunday (12/17, always on the 3rd Sunday of each month) on the Article II proposal. Rev. Alison is looking forward to leading our community in this conversation when she’s here in person for her December visit from the 17th through the 24th.

Minister’s Messages

Rev. Alison posts weekly messages to our community through our church website. In this week’s message, Rev. Alison shares her delight at the pluralism in action she witnessed on her visit to Saltwater Church this month. You can find Rev. Alison’s message via the home page of the church website or here: Minister’s Messages.

Important Community Reminder

Being Good Neighbors to Tenants

Monday through Friday, as most of us know, the Lighthouse becomes Planting Flowers Learning Center until 5pm daily. During that time, the Lighthouse building is their space, and to maintain their licensure, everyone in the preschool while children are there must have a background check on file at the school. This means that the Saltwater Church community needs to plan our work in the Lighthouse to take place on the weekends or after 5pm on weekdays. Additionally, any items used in the Lighthouse need to be thoroughly cleaned and returned to where they were found after use, as many items are shared by Saltwater Church and Planting Flowers. Finally, if you or your committee, group or task force needs to be in the Lighthouse during preschool hours for any reason, this needs to be communicated to and approved by Planting Flowers leadership ahead of time. Thank you for taking care to tend to our relationship with Planting Flowers.

Ways To Live Our Values

Share The Plate for November
Hummingbird Indigenous Family Services

Half of all undesignated donations received in the month of November will be shared with Hummingbird Indigenous Family Services. https://www.hummingbird-ifs.org/

Hummingbird Indigenous Family Services (HIFS) helps address the astounding inequity in maternal mortality for indigenous women. This program grew out of United Indians of All Tribes doula and lactation counseling program funded by Best Starts for Kids (of which SUUC was an active participant).

The Hummingbird program believes that healthy mothers and babies are the foundation of a healthy community. By centering Indigenous people in all their work, they demonstrate the importance of providing culturally relevant care with Indigenous doulas and Indigenous lactation counseling as well as addressing other family needs.

American Indian and Alaska Native women who give birth have a higher maternal mortality ratio than any other ethnic group—eight times greater than white people and twice as large as Black people, with 80% of these pregnancy-related deaths being preventable. They have developed a guaranteed income pilot program called “The Nest”. Hummingbird works in Seattle and King County.

You can make a donation to share the plate through the donate button on our website https://saltwaterchurch.org/stewardshipstewardship-overview/stewardshipdonate/ or mail a check to the church office with “basket” in the memo line: Saltwater UU Church, 25701 14 Pl S., Des Moines, WA 98198.

Climate Message of the Week

Holiday traditions can be hard on the climate with more than usual of everything like food, gifts, decorations. Are there any ways you make your holidays more climate-friendly? In our family, it’s a tradition and running joke that instead of buying gift boxes, every year I stash gifts inside food boxes before wrapping them. Family members joke about getting cocoa mix or crackers before opening the box to see what their real gift is. It’s a small, silly thing but it allows me to avoid buying special boxes and use boxes I’ll be recycling anyway. Share your tips with Saltwater members by emailing them to me at sheridjacobson@yahoo.com so I can put them in a December Climate Message. ****Image credit: Vika Kirillova

Are there topics or questions you’d like to see covered in future Climate Messages? Email suggestions to Sheri Jacobson at sheridjacobson@yahoo.com.
