January: What Does it mean to be a People of Imagination?
In the month of January we are exploring what it means to be a people of imagination. A people who dream, create, and build; who are fed by creative practice and working for justice. A people who believe that what exists right now is not all that can be. Soul matters describes being a people of imagination as the practice of waking up to possibility and healing the world by conjuring up its missing parts. Join us as we explore and create together.

January 10: “Creative Spark,” Rev. Kristen Kuriga
January 17: “Public Imagination,” Rev. Kristen Kuriga
January 24: Title TBA, Guest Minister, Rev. Emily Hartlief

From the Board & HCT

Guidelines from the Pandemic Taskforce
The Pandemic Taskforce, appointed by the Board, and led by Sharon Crow, Karen LaFe, Judy Featherstone, and Anjali Lopez, has been hard at work. Although we believe it will be some time before it is safe for us to have church programming in person, it is important to have developed policies to guide these decisions. At this link you can read or download the COVID-19 guidelines the taskforce has created base on WA State requirements and CDC guidelines, and have been accepted by the Board.

Gear Lending Library for Little Explorers Outdoor Preschool
Beginning January 2021, Little Explorers, a non-profit licensed outdoor preschool program, will open on the campus of Saltwater Unitarian Universalist Church. Little Explorers aims to provide access to low-income families to outdoor education.  One obstacle to equity is the cost of gear. With our support, Little Explorers envisions offering a Gear Lending library so that families will be able to check out essential gear for their preschooler that will reduce the cost of participating in the program and increase access. The cost per child is around $300 and will keep them warm and dry in the elements of the Pacific Northwest.  The Racial Justice Organizing Team is spearheading this effort because we believe in founder and director Teshia Flowers’ vision of building a program that is both racially and economically diverse.

You can help clothe a child!  Donate to build the gear lending library!

SCAN! (Saltwater Climate Action Now!) meets the 1st Sunday of the month from 12:00 to 1:30pm, in the church Zoom Room.

Climate Message of the Week:  Exploiting the planet often goes hand in hand with exploiting people. Palm oil is found in almost half the food products in grocery stores and almost three-fourths of cosmetics. Not only does the production of palm oil involve the destruction of rainforests and destroy the environment, the industry is highly dependent on child labor, using children as young as five as workers. Become an informed and vocal consumer about palm oil industry practices. Check labels and avoid palm oil products when you can. If a product does contain palm oil look for RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) certification. Pressure companies to use oils in their products that are sustainable and produced without child labor. For more information, here’s the link to an AP story about palm oil and child labor and how one Tennessee Girl Scout is working to get palm oil out of Girl Scout cookies: https://apnews.com/article/palm-oil-forests-indonesia-scouts-83b01f2789e9489569960da63b2741c4

Federal Way Day Center Donations Needed
The Federal Way Day Center for unsheltered adults is providing important support to our local community while practicing social distancing. Their remarkable record of providing safe care has resulted in ZERO Covid cases. Those who were most vulnerable were admitted to safe housing sites in Kent and SeaTac. Ten long-term Day Center guests will be approved for Permanent Supported Housing at the soon to open Thea Bowman Apartments in Kent.
Your help with the most needed items can go a long way to maintaining that safety record:  cup noodles, hand warmers, rain ponchos, and trash bags. You can park in front of the Day Center and call (253-893-7895) and someone will come out to pick up the donations.  33505 13 Pl S behind the Multi-Service Center.  Or you may contact Lucia lfaithfull@comcast.net or Diane ddobrowolski@earthlink.net to arrange for your donations to be picked up.
