Worship In August at Saltwater Church

August 27  What Do You Think of When I Say “Beauty”? – Miriam Woito, SWUUC Member

A time to reflect on the concept of beauty as a source of ways to see our world and each other. Is beauty really in the eyes of the beholder?

September 3  What Is Necessary For Love? – Victoria Poling, Guest Minister

Author and scholar bell hooks [who uses a lowercase spelling] observes, “While ours is a nation wherein the vast majority of citizens are followers of religious faiths that proclaim the transformative power of love, many people feel they do not have a clue as to how to love.” Today we’ll explore a variety of perspectives on what is necessary for love.

September 10  Water Communion – Janeane Weprin, SWUUC Member

Please join us for our annual Water Communion service. We will mingle the waters we have saved from the places and times we have visited this past summer, places and times we hold dear, that are special and/or sacred to us. It could be water from someplace exotic, or it could be from our own backyards or kitchen sinks. What matters is the meaning of the water, what it symbolizes for you. In this way we will honor our connection to each other, to the Earth, and to Life itself.

From Our Leadership

Message from our Search Team

Right now, as we are looking for another minister, is a critical time to step up with your commitment and creativity to help bring our vision to life– so that, as a community, we practice love, foster connection, nurture spiritual growth and act for justice. Here are two things that you can do right now.

1- We’re excited to be sponsoring a learning team to attend “Leading from the Heart“!

This class will explore UU and ancestral theology, the synergy of passion and mission, and living out of conviction. Starting September 6, there will be two sessions/month for 3 months (a total of 6 sessions over 3 months): a Zoom class, where you’ll get to interact with UUs from across the Pacific Western Region, and a local (Saltwater UU) team meeting.

This is a great opportunity to widen your circle and deepen local connections; to learn about yourself and be inspired by others.

We started to publicize this class last week. What’s new is, Jessica Nash is coordinating a local learning team– yay!

Saltwater Church Scholarships are available for those interested in the local learning team. In return, we hope each individual will consider how what you learn can support our church community, and we want the team to share what you have learned– so we can expand the learning circle.

  • If you would like to be part of the Saltwater UU learning team, and need a scholarship, after you register please forward the email confirming your registration to Jessica Nash:

2- Attend the Leadership Convening, on Saturday September 9, 1 – 3 pm.

This is an opportunity for community and planning. Convening is one of the most powerful, life-altering forces in the universe. This combining of energies in our community can stir us to rise in our current situation and envision what might be possible. Join as as we combine our visions and plan how to make them happen. Help us create a new year of growth in spirituality and leadership as we work together to create what we want to have in our lives. Join us in the Sanctuary or on Zoom. Childcare will be available.

Ways To Live Our Values

Share The Plate for August
WestSide Baby

Half of all undesignated donations received in the month of August will be shared with WestSide Baby

WestSide Baby meets the basic needs of children to promote safety, security & healthy development. They provide essential items to keep children safe, warm and dry by collecting and distributing diapers, clothing, and equipment throughout Western King County. They receive donations from the community, check and sort those donations, and distribute them directly to 100+ partner agencies, who are experts in their families, and the children they serve. These professionals get the items the children need, and WestSide Baby can focus on collecting the basic essentials.

In 2022, when families throughout our community faced unprecedented need, we distributed 2.6 million diapers to thousands of families throughout King County compared to 1.5 million diapers in 2019.

You can make a donation to share the plate through the donate button on our website  or mail a check to the church office with “basket” in the memo line: Saltwater UU Church, 25701 14 Pl S., Des Moines, WA 98198.
